What does the India v Pakistan group game decide?

India top Group A with four points from two matches. Pakistan have two points from one. Thailand have already completed their three group games. That leaves a short table with an unusual shape: one side is through, one side is out, and the other two are separated by games in hand rather than by points.

Read that table and Saturday stops being a knockout. Pakistan's clearest route to the semi-finals runs through Hong Kong, China on 7 September, not through India. A win there takes them to four points and past Thailand's completed two. What the India match changes is top spot in the group and net run rate, and net run rate is the tiebreaker that decides second place if Pakistan lose both of their remaining games.

Eight teams are split into two groups of four in this edition, with the top two in each group going to the semi-finals on 10 and 11 September and the final on 13 September. Every match is at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

How have the two sides played in Dubai so far?

India's opening match against Thailand was not the procession the margin suggests. Shafali Verma made 64 from 36 balls with eight fours and three sixes. India then lost eight wickets for 46 runs and finished on 159 for 9. Suleeporn Laomi took 3 for 26 and Sunida Chaturongrattana 2 for 31. Thailand were dismissed 94 runs short.

Three days later India looked like a different side. Smriti Mandhana scored 124 from 64 balls with 14 fours and seven sixes as India posted 193 for 5 against Hong Kong, China, and the chase never started. Her opening stand with Verma was worth 74 from 47 balls. Deepti Sharma took 3 for 9.

That innings carried two records with it. Mandhana passed Mithali Raj's 10,868 international runs to become the leading run-scorer in women's international cricket, and the century was her 18th across formats, one more than Meg Lanning. Both figures are as at 3 September 2026.

Pakistan's single match was a much smaller game. They made 120 against Thailand, Muneeba Ali top-scoring with 54, and defended it by 35 runs on what the ICC described as a slow wicket. Sadia Iqbal removed two batters early, and Thipatcha Putthawong (3 for 18) and Suleeporn Laomi (3 for 14) had done the damage with the ball earlier in the day.

What has the Dubai surface actually done?

Two of those three totals sit under 160, and one of them sits under 130. The third was made by a batter having the innings of her life. That is the honest reading of the first week: this is a ground where a par score is being set by the surface rather than by the format.

The ball comes nicely when it's new, when it gets old, there's a bit of hold.

That "hold" is the whole match. A ball that grips slightly on the surface arrives later than the batter expects, which turns a drive into a leading edge and a pull into a top edge. It is why both sides carry so much spin, and why the middle overs, roughly overs seven to 15, are where this game is likely to be decided rather than at the death.

What is the head-to-head record between India and Pakistan in women's T20Is?

Ahead of the sides' June meeting, the ICC noted that Pakistan's only win over India in their previous nine T20I meetings had come at the 2022 Asia Cup. That is the context Saturday sits in, and it has not been dented since.

The sides last met on 14 June 2026 at Birmingham, in India's opening match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. India made 170 for 6, Mandhana scoring 68 from 44 and Richa Ghosh 34 from 17. Pakistan were bowled out for 106 in 17 overs. Muneeba Ali's 41 from 35 was the innings that lasted.

Deepti Sharma took 5 for 10 in that match, the best figures recorded in a women's T20I, and passed 166 wickets to become the leading wicket-taker in the format at the time. That last record has since changed hands twice inside a week: Putthawong reclaimed it during Pakistan's match against Thailand, days after Sharma had gone past her.

Which individual matchups shape the game?

Three are worth watching closely, and all three are about spin rather than pace.

• Mandhana against left-arm spin. Pakistan have two specialist left-arm spinners in Sadia Iqbal and Nashra Sundhu. A left-arm spinner turns the ball away from a left-handed batter's body, which is the hardest ball for Mandhana to hit through the leg side on a gripping surface.
• Muneeba Ali against India's spinners. She has made 54 and 41 in her last two innings against serious attacks, and she is the batter Pakistan need through the powerplay if 130 is going to be a competitive total.
• Deepti Sharma in the middle overs. Her 5 for 10 in June came from off spin bowled into a collapsing innings. On a surface that holds, she is the bowler India can give overs seven to 15 to.

What does each side still have to settle?

India are without Jemimah Rodrigues, ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury. Head coach Amol Muzumdar's line on it was straightforward: "She will be missed but there are some players who have come in the team, and who will do well." The eight-for-46 collapse against Thailand is the passage that has not yet been answered, because Mandhana's hundred against Hong Kong, China removed the need to answer it.

Pakistan lost wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi before the tournament with a posterior left knee problem, with rehabilitation expected to take up to four weeks. Sadaf Shamas, who had played 12 T20Is since her debut in January 2023, came in as the replacement and made 20 against Thailand.

Neither side is settled, then, and both captains have said the fixture itself changes the calculation.

What does this mean for the rest of the tournament?

Group B is being led by Sri Lanka, who beat India in the 2024 Asia Cup and are the defending champions. Bangladesh play them on 6 September. Whoever comes through Group A meets a side from that group in the semi-finals on 10 and 11 September, with the final on 13 September, all at the same Dubai ground.

India have won the Women's Asia Cup seven times, and arrive on the back of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 title and a first women's Test win at Lord's in July. Pakistan were eighth in the ICC women's T20I team rankings when the two sides met in June, with India third. Neither of those facts settles a 40-over game on a slow pitch, but they explain why the group looks the way it does.
