England beat Sri Lanka 3-0 in their three-match T20I series, which finished at Old Trafford on Saturday 19 September 2026. The margins were 119 runs in Southampton, six wickets in Cardiff and eight wickets in Manchester, and the sweep took England above India at the top of the ICC men's T20I team rankings.

England batted first only once, after Sri Lanka chose to bowl at Southampton. Harry Brook then chose to field at both Cardiff and Old Trafford, and England finished those chases with 47 and 62 balls to spare.

How big was the gap between the two sides?

Wide. Put the three games together and England scored 526 runs from 251 legal balls for the loss of 10 wickets. Sri Lanka scored 404 runs from 347 balls and lost 29 wickets.

That is a scoring rate of 12.57 runs per over against 6.99, and 52.6 runs per wicket against 13.9. Those are CPL's sums from the three scorecards.

The ball count is the part worth sitting with. England faced 96 fewer deliveries than Sri Lanka across the series and still made 122 more runs. In those two chases England needed only 12.1 and 9.4 of their 20 overs.

Where did Sri Lanka's innings keep going wrong?

Not usually at the very start. The pattern was clusters: two or three wickets inside a couple of overs, after which the innings never got its shape back.

Cardiff is the clearest example. Pathum Nissanka and Lahiru Udara put on 56 for the first wicket. Liam Dawson then took two wickets in two balls, removing Udara and Kamil Mishara, and Sri Lanka lost five wickets for 39 runs between the sixth over and the 12th.

A stand of 44 between Charith Asalanka and Wanindu Hasaranga dragged them to 139 for 5. The last 17 balls then brought four wickets for six runs.

At Old Trafford the slide came later and went further. From 107 for 4, Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets for 17 runs in 30 balls, two of them run-outs. Kamindu Mendis, who made 35 from 28 balls, was the fifth man out, and only Dasun Shanaka, with 12, reached double figures after him.

Who did the damage with the ball for England?

Sonny Baker. He took six wickets for 44 runs in 11.5 overs across the series, including two maidens, an economy rate of 3.72. For context, Sri Lanka scored at just under seven an over across the series as a whole.

Jamie Overton was the other bowler Sri Lanka could not get away. Between them, Baker and Overton bowled 22.5 overs for 102 runs and 11 wickets, conceding 4.47 an over. England's other five bowlers went at 8.37 an over across their 35 overs.

The split matters. Dawson took as many wickets as Baker, but at more than twice the cost per over. Baker was the bowler who stopped the runs, and Sri Lanka never found a way to score freely against him in any of the three games.

How did England score so quickly?

Mostly through Jos Buttler and Brook. Buttler made 172 runs from 92 balls in the series. Brook, the captain, made 170 from 78 and was named Player of the Series. Each was dismissed twice.

At Southampton, Buttler and Brook added 128 for the second wicket in 10 overs, from the third over to the 13th. Brook finished on 114 not out from 49 balls, and England's 254 for 4 set up the largest margin of the series.

At Old Trafford they added 85 between the third over and the ninth before Brook was run out for 33. Buttler finished the game on 62 not out from 32 balls, with seven fours and two sixes.

Aneurin Donald, who made his T20I debut in the first match, gave the top of the order early speed: 46 runs from 24 balls across his three innings. Tom Banton's 52 not out from 24 balls closed out the Cardiff chase.

Did anything go right for Sri Lanka?

Some of it did. Nissanka was their leading run-scorer with 85 from 56 balls, a strike rate of just under 152, and he was their top scorer in two of the three games. Hasaranga, playing his 100th T20I at Cardiff, bowled his two overs at Old Trafford for 11 runs.

The problem was what surrounded those contributions. At Old Trafford, Sri Lanka's other bowlers conceded 115 runs from 7.4 overs, and England's innings of 126 included 18 extras, 17 of them from wides. Against a batting side scoring at more than 12 an over, extra deliveries are expensive.

What does the series do to the ICC T20I rankings?

It puts England back on top. England had first moved above India on 11 July 2026, after a 4-0 home series win over India, but India reclaimed the position two weeks later.

On the ICC table as recorded on 19 September, the two sides share a rounded rating of 269. England have 11,021 points from 41 matches and India 17,201 from 64. Divide through and England's lead is 268.80 to 268.77, which is about as narrow as a lead at the top of a ranking table gets.
